WHY?

3rd Annual La Paz World Cup Invitational - Press Release

Healey rocks WORLD CUP - La Ventana, BCS

Mark Healey relatively unknown in the competitive spearfishing world outside of Hawaii, showed up here to demonstrate his skills in the world of Bluewater.

Needless to say, he was unstoppable, demonstrating extreme focus and natural talent in the water, taking more species, and more fish than any of the other 21 divers.

Competitors from Australia, USA mainland and Mark from HI, arrived on the 13th to find flat seas, good water, and lots of pelagic fish.

The crew was hosted by Tim Hatler and his staff at Palapas Ventana for the second year, and they showed what hospitality is truly about, stepping up with outstanding service and food, coupled with lodging and meals steps from the beach.

Mark started out in the lead day 1, and never let up, holding GR Tarr and Dennis Haussler to 2nd and 3rd place with a healthy margin at the end of the 5 days of diving.

Diving to 100ft in search of jacks, worked its magic with Mark showing the only two yellowtail taken at the meet, both below 95ft, down in the cold dark waters below the thermocline.

As a competitor and organizer of this meet, I can say that it was truly a pleasure to compete against Mark and all the others, all showing true sportsmanship and camaraderie during this event.

I want to thank all the sponsors this year, primarily PELAJ and 20FATHOMS, PELAJ really stepped up to the plate this year, with GREAT gear for the table, and financial help. Many thanks to this top spear gear maker from down under!!!!!

As well, Daryl Wong, Riffe International, Palapas Ventana, Mares, Hammerhead, Kiger Construction, HSD, IFSN, Pelagic, Imersion, Florida Freedivers and Rob Allen, Orca Thula, SeaSniper, these companies showed what its all about in presenting the top gear from around the world to support this event, and make the prize table something that every diver was drooling over.

I want to thank all the divers who came, and Tim, Jimena, Eric, Karon, Shannon and the rest of the crew at Palapas Ventana for a near perfect world cup. Next year should be even better, so put this one on the books, and let’s get more Hawaiians there to compete at this world class event!

Next years dates look like July 5-11, so put it on your calendar as there are 30 spots open, and when it fills, that’s it! There is a discount for early registration, so contact me at dennis@20fathoms.com, and we’ll see you at the world cup next year!!!
