The 2013 La Paz World Cup is coming...
The World Cup Invitational Perpetual Trophy
When I decided to start this meet, I wanted to come up with a trophy that was different than normal, something that would really stand out. Something divers would be would relish having theyre name on as the winner.
Thinking about who I knew who could get creative enough to pull this off, Chris came to mind. Now, I had not known him that long, but when I threw the idea at him, he was totally receptive, and went to work brainstorming ideas.
After sorting through a few, he hit on the idea of carving a tuna, and mounting it above the base that Cliff Niederer had made for me years ago.
The fish exudes the essence of a speared large fish, and even has a spear thru it. I don't remember what kind of wood it is, I'm a steel guy, but its natural lines lend themselves to the curves and shape of the fish, lending credit to Chris' ability to see beyond the flat wood, and how it would reveal itself.
The finished piece exceeded his and my expectations, and reinforced my belief in him as hands down, one of the finest craftsman I have ever known, steel or wood.
Now we just need to get his sorry ass down there to compete, and try and get his name on it!!!
HUGE shout out to Chris at SEA SNIPER for his talent and support in making this a class event!! Thanks Chris!
The tuna was hand-carved from lacewood.
